The screed has the power to smooth over the various imperfections created during the paving process. Therefore, improper operation of the screed leveling can result in inconsistent thickness and an uneven final product.

Avoid these 5 screed operation mistakes for a top-quality asphalt mat.

#1 - CHANGING THE ANGLE OF ATTACK TOO FREQUENTLY

It takes up to five tow-lengths for the screed to settle into a new angle. Give your screed time to react, so you can accurately confirm the new angle.

#2 - CHECKING THE LIFT THICKNESS IN ONE SPOT

This can result in false measurements, especially when paving over a milled surface. For greater accuracy, check the lift thickness in at least three different spots.

#3 - PAVING AT INCONSISTENT SPEEDS

Quick starts and stops can take the screed out of balance. Rather, aim for nonstop paving at a uniform speed for optimal quality.

#4 - PAVING WITH POOR VISIBILITY

Screed operators must monitor the material feeding into the screed in case they need to change course. A low screed design provides good visibility and helps ensure good paving results.

#5 - RELYING SOLELY ON AUTOMATIC GRADE CONTROL

Automatic grade and slope control tools, such as sensors, 3D levelling, and laser systems can result in mistakes if improperly calibrated. Always double-check and re-calibrate if necessary!
